As parents, the moment we realise our little ones are inching toward “big school” can bring a whirlwind of emotions—pride, excitement, and sometimes, a touch of anxiety. At Her Story & Co., we understand that starting school is a major milestone, not just for your child but for you too. That’s why our School Readiness Workshop goes beyond pencil grips and phonics, diving into what truly helps children thrive as they begin their school journey.

What Does “School Ready” Really Mean?
When we talk about school readiness, many people picture academic skills like counting to 20 or recognising letters. While those skills are helpful, school readiness is about much more than academics. It’s about your child being emotionally, socially, and physically prepared to adapt to a brand-new environment.
The Key Pillars of School Readiness
In our evidence-based workshop, we explore the core developmental areas that help children feel confident and capable on their first day and beyond:
1. Emotional Regulation
Can your child cope when things don’t go their way? Are they able to express big feelings like frustration or sadness with words (or with a little help from a caring adult)? Emotional resilience is a huge part of navigating the classroom, especially during moments of transition or challenge.
2. Independence Skills
Children don’t need to be fully independent to start school, but small things like being able to go to the toilet, wash their hands, open a lunchbox, or put on a coat can boost their confidence—and make life easier for their teachers, too!
3. Social and Communication Skills
Can your child ask for help? Wait their turn? Join in play with others? These skills help them build friendships, feel included, and understand the rhythm of a classroom day.
4. Listening and Attention
School involves a lot of sitting, listening, and following instructions. These skills develop over time, and our workshop shares playful strategies to support them at home in ways that feel natural and fun.
5. Motor Skills
From holding a pencil to navigating playground equipment, fine and gross motor skills help children engage in everyday school activities. It’s not about perfection—it’s about offering opportunities to practice through play.

Every Child is Different—and That’s OK
One of the most reassuring messages we share in our workshop is this: there is no single checklist or perfect age for school readiness. Children develop at different rates, and many “readiness” skills continue to grow well into the first year of school.
What’s most helpful is creating a supportive, low-pressure environment where your child feels safe, curious, and capable. And that starts at home—with you.
